Evelyn E Smith


ASHTABULA-Evelyn Eleanor Smith, 92, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012 at home surrounded by her family.

She was born April 17, 1920 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, the daughter of George and Mary (Truska) Labutis. She moved to Ashtabula in 1941. She married Leon Smith on May 13, 1944 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula.

Evelyn was a waitress at the Ashtabula Hotel in the 1940’s and later spent her years raising her two children. Always helping out with their activities and being a homeroom mother while they were in school. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula. In her spare time she enjoyed being active in the church circle, growing violets, watching the Cleveland Indians, reading, doing picture and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her son, Eugene (Barbara) Smith of Ashtabula; daughter, Elayne (Kevin Shelott) Smith of Ashtabula; sister, Mary Swartz of Geneva; two grandchildren, Stacey (Brian) Bagley of Jefferson, and Stephanie (Daniel Meinke) Smith of Ashtabula; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Lexi, and Ethan Bagley.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leon E. Smith on January 2, 2012; brothers, George and Victor Labutis; sisters, Alice Gruel, and Alberta Yokawonis; six siblings that passed in childhood; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 12PM at DUCRO FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with Rev. Stephen Long, of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 11 Am until the time of service at 12PM.
