ASHTABULA – Chester George “Chet” Kapen, 92, formerly of Bobwhite Drive passed away Friday, March 31, 2017 at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born April 17, 1924 in Monroe Center, the son of Andrew and Susie (Slobiak) Kapen and had been a lifelong area resident.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
Prior to his retirement in 1980, he worked 32 years for Rockwell Brake as an inspector. He also ran Chedok Woodcrafts as his business and hobby.
A member of the East Ashtabula Club and the United Auto Workers, Local #274, he enjoyed hunting, woodworking, country music, and cats (especially his favorite baby, Boots).
His survivors include two step-daughters, Barbara (Arnold) Schulte of Ashtabula and Victoria Carroll of Morro Bay, CA; and several nieces and nephews, including Jan Kapen and Wick VanGorder who have been a true blessing to him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Jones) Kapen on February 24, 2015; three brothers, Andy, Joe and Frank Kapen; two sisters, Agnes VanGorder and Mary Titus; his previous wife, Betty, in 1972; and his parents.
Calling hours will be held from 11 AM to 12 Noon with a service to be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Rev. Thomas McCain will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
