CINCINNATI – Michael James Hanson, 48, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017.
He was born July 16, 1968 in Ashtabula, the son of James R. and Sandy (Bartlett) Hanson, and was raised by his dad and step-mother, Patricia (Dunick) Hanson since the age of 2.
A 1986 graduate of Harbor High School, he earned his degree in business from Kent State University, and then later a master’s degree from the University of Akron.
While in high school and college, he worked many jobs to keep busy and earn money – from his paper route in the harbor and McDonalds to the press room at the Star Beacon and Sea World.
For the past 17 years, he has lived in Cincinnati where he moved after receiving a job with the IRS where he has worked as an accountant mostly with corporate taxes and non-profits.
Michael had a large collection of Disney movies and loved to watch them with his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed sports, collecting coins and baseball and football cards, and 80’s and 90’s music. He loved to play poker and was active in a local poker club which competed each year to win a trip to the World Series of Poker. He had also played drums in a band for a number of years and had a true love for animals, especially cats.
His survivors include his parents, James and Patricia Hanson of Ashtabula; his mother and step-father, Sandy (George) Bartlett-Ambrose of Florida; two sisters, Michelle (Greg) Mitcham of North Kingsville and Beverly Jean Kehres of Ashtabula; brother, Steven (Kirsten) Ambrose of Erie, PA; his great-grandfather, Cosmos Coccitto of Conneaut; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved cat, Miss Kitty.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Geraldine Bartlett and Harold and Helen (Hassett) Hanson; great-grandparents, Edward and Madonna Hassett and Vera Coccitto.
A calling hour will be held from 4 to 7 PM with a service to follow at 7 PM on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Deacon Rich Johnson of Our Lady of Peace Parish will preside. A private burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery on Friday.
Contributions in his memory will be made to the Animal Protective League, the American Kidney Foundation, or the American Diabetes Association.
