James G. Long
ASHTABULA James Gregg Long, 80, died on May 1, 2017 while a resident of Saybrook Landing.
Jim, the son of Leonard Long and Helen (Long) McDonald, was born on March 30, 1937 in California, Pennsylvania.
Jim served four years in the United States Marine Corps as a Military Police Officer and was proud of his service to his country and remained a true patriot.
Jim retired as a Lieutenant from Conrail Railroad after many years of dedicated service as a member of the Railroad security force.
Jim was a man of many talents and interests; he enjoyed running bulldozers, camping in Canada with family, fishing, riding motorcycles (taking long rides with his daughter on the back), snowmobiles and ATVs, playing cards with family, watching his sons play football and wrestle (often working out with them), bon fires and pig roasts with their teams, and hanging out with friends, both old and new. Jim had a soft spot for others and often helped those in need.
He loved to talk about his service in the Marine Corp, and remaining the best of friends with his fellow marines and their families. Jim had an ornery streak, always looking for trouble and was pleased when he found it, picking on his loved ones, his beloved nurses, aids and staff at Saybrook Landing, and his lifelong friends. If he picked on you, he loved you. His constant companion was his beloved dog, Gidget.
Jim will be remembered for his love of family, his sarcastic wit, and the love and support he gave to his eight beloved grandchildren and the children of his beloved nurses. He consoled them when things did not go well and celebrated their triumphs.
Jim is survived by his children, Robert (Nicole) Long, James (Candy) Long, both of Ashtabula, and Tina Wertheimer of Milford, Michigan; his eight grandchildren, Matthew Morrison of Keego Harbor, Michigan, Melanie Morrison of Livonia, Michigan, Mia Wertheimer, Maggie Wertheimer all of Milford, Michigan, Mitchell Long, Alycia Colon, Brandon Long and Blake Long all of Ashtabula; as well as loving nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Emery and his parents.
