Robert G. Palmer

ASHTABULA - Robert G. Palmer passed away May 10, 2017 at home, surrounded by family, after battling a long illness.
Born May 11, 1939 in Union City, PA, Bob was the son of Russell and Goldie (Guthrie) Palmer. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Edinboro University of PA, and began his teaching career in Madison, Ohio in 1962. Two years later he married Teresa Kay Van Nette, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014. His dedication to education led him to the several administrative positions. He served as the principal for both Lincoln and Pierpont Elementary Schools, coached both basketball and volleyball for the 8th and 9th grade girls, and later completed his career as a sixth-grade teacher at Ridgeview Elementary School.
Bob was an avid model railroader; he participated in Tuesday Night Trains for forty-seven years and attended national railroad conventions; traveled across the US on Amtrak, enjoying the beauty of the country along the way. He was also a sports enthusiast and yearly traveled to Columbus, OH, to watch the girl's state basketball tournaments. Bob was a generous blood donor, and donated over 5 gallons to the American Red Cross. He believed giving blood was a great humanitarian aid. He often challenged others to go with him and give the gift of life.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kay Palmer; son, Scott (Marilyn) Palmer of Tampa Fl; daughter, Kimberly (Darren) Cook of Waterford PA; and grandchildren, Corwin, Morgan, Gabriella, Sydney, Kathryn, Robert, and Owen.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, J. Allan Palmer.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name may be given to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, Alzheimer's Association, or the APL in Ashtabula.
