Creola I. Hunt-Chappell
ASHTABULA- On Wednesday, August 16, 2017 God reached down and transferred mortal to immortal; Creola Inez Hunt-Chappell, 87, was called Home.
The daughter of Benford and Essie Iola (LaGron) Dismuke, Creola was born on November 23, 1929 in Louisville, Mississippi. Creola and her family moved to Ohio in the early1950”s and she remained a resident until her passing.
Creola was trained as baker when she lived in Mississippi and brought her skills to the Ashtabula area. She was called on to bake for many special occasions and had a large following. Creola worked at Ashtabula General Hospital until going to work for Rockwell Plastics. When Rockwell closed; she worked at Webb Manufacturing. Thinking retirement was for her, she did so. Boredom soon set in and she went to work for Ashtabula Board of Education as a lunch monitor finally retiring at age seventy.
Creola found Christ at an early age joining Peoples Missionary Baptist Church shortly after moving from Mississippi. An active member of Peoples Missionary Baptist Church, Creola served on the Mother’s Board, was the Sunday School Superintendent for many years; training many youth and young adults to stand in her place. Her zeal for Christ was reflected in her service as a previous Baptist Training Union (BTU
) and the church’s Vacation Bible School. Also a member of the Faithful Ruth Missionary Society, and was a past member of the Gospel Chorus. Higher Christian Education was her goal, Creola attended classes in the Union District, serving as the Vice-President of the Women’s Ministry, Eastern Area under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Godbold. Creola later taught classes in the Union District as a Certified Dean of Christian Education. With Christ and Heaven on her mind, Creola was a missionary and called others to join her on their homeward journey. Creola lived a Godly life, encouraging others along the way. Anyone could tell she was a servant of God in her speech and actions. Although her last years were lived in illness, Creola never stopped singing the praises of God or reading her Bible. A thirty year breast cancer survivor it was Creola’s unwavering faith in God and her strength and determination that carried her through.
Creola was a wonderful cook; every meal at her home was a feast. Her first husband, John Louis Hunt was affiliated with many Gospel Groups throughout Ohio and the South. Creola would host these groups at her home during their many tours. It was her ability to make people feel at home that was appreciated. She assisted in raising three of her grandchildren. Creola will be remembered for her dedication to her God, her church and to her family. She was generous with love and sparing in discipline.
Creola is survived by her loving children, Imogene Hunt of Bethesda, MD, John Hunt of Ashtabula, Evangeline Henderson of Detroit, MI, Brenda (Credrick) Miller also, of Ashtabula, Isaac (Janice) Chappell of Jefferson, and Yvonne Bass of Montgomery, AL, Barbara Tucker , of FL., whom thought of as a daughter , sisters-in-law, Emma Dismuke and Mattie Hunt both of Ashtabula; ten special grandchildren; Shawnda Howard, Michelle Hunt, and Damien(Tina) Hunt , whom she helped to raise, Antoine (Annette) Hunt, James Alvin (Starrice) Hunt, Villena Hunt, Jasmin Gross, John Aaron Hunt, Jasmin and Jewell Chappell; seventeen precious great-grandchildren; one beloved great-great grandchild; her cousin Earlene Hubbard, whom she considered a sister; many nieces, nephews; and friends and too many other cousins to list living in various states.
Creola was preceded in death by her second husband, Rev. Dave Chappell, whom she married on September 2, 2007 ; his passing was on July 18, 2011; the father of her children, John Louis Hunt; her siblings, George, and Phlenoid ”Bill” Dismuke, Ida Muriel, and Imogene; son-in-law Charles Henderson, and her parents.
Homegoing Services were held at 11: AM on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Peoples Missionary Baptist Church, 3837 West Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio. Rev. Dr. German Womack, Pastor officiating. Rev. Samuel Richardson, Pastor Emeritus of Central Missionary Baptist Church, is assisting. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ohio.
A calling hour was observed from 10AM until time of service at the church on Wednesday, August 23, 2017.
